Bucharest small-batch producer takes Bronze at the European Hot Sauce Awards 2026

Chilliphoria's Disco Fever, a habanero sauce built on raspberry and dragon fruit, picks up Romania's foothold in the Freestyle category

Bucharest eats on mici off the berărie grill, mămăligă with brânză de burduf, and the kapia peppers and stone fruit that turn over through Piața Obor on the daily. Chilliphoria, a small-batch sauce maker in Sector 3 run by Alina Teodorescu, builds its sauces on that same fruit-and-pepper base and has taken a Bronze Medal at the European Hot Sauce Awards 2026 (heatawards.eu), Europe's flagship hot sauce competition, with Disco Fever in the Freestyle category.

Chilliphoria works a fruit-forward range of nine sauces, pairing exotic chilies with fruit bases and bottling under one label out of Bucharest. Habanero, Carolina Reaper, Trinidad Moruga Scorpion and jalapeño sit across the lineup against passion fruit, açaí, mango, guava, raspberry and dragon fruit. Sauces are made without colourings, preservatives or flavour enhancers, by the founder, in 100 ml bottles. The brand launched October 2024 and distributes through chilliphoria.com plus a handful of Romanian specialist retailers.

Nathan Austin on Disco Fever:

"Disco Fever sits in the Freestyle bracket because it's hard to file anywhere else. Habanero into raspberry into dragon fruit is the kind of build that should fall apart, and Chilliphoria has it held together with ginger and white pepper doing the structural work underneath." – Nathan Austin, Tasting Editor, Republic of Heat

Disco Fever took a Bronze Medal in Freestyle: habanero up front, with raspberry at 30% and dragon fruit at 20% of the build, finished with kapia peppers, tomato, apple, ginger, white pepper, garlic, sea salt and a touch of bio lemon. The maker rates it 6 out of 10 on heat and points it at burgers, pizza, grill and cheese boards.

"We've been making Disco Fever in small batches in Bucharest, by hand, and taking a Bronze in Freestyle at a blind European panel is a result the whole project has earned. Romania doesn't have a long bench at this competition yet, so getting a podium with a habanero, raspberry and dragon fruit build means a lot for what we want to do next." – Alina Teodorescu, Chilliphoria

The European Hot Sauce Awards 2026 ran over 200 sauces from across the continent through blind tasting this year, scored on five criteria by a deliberately mixed panel of chefs, sommeliers, critics and chilli specialists. Freestyle was 12 EU entries deep and is the category for sauces that don't sit cleanly inside the heat-band or stylistic brackets, so the judging asks whether the build holds together on its own terms.

"Freestyle is where the panel has to decide whether an unusual combination earns its place or just gets in its own way. Chilliphoria's Disco Fever earned it, and we're watching closely for what Alina brings next." – Neil Numb, Founder, European Hot Sauce Awards

ABOUT THE EUROPEAN HOT SAUCE AWARDS The European Hot Sauce Awards (EHSA) is the professional competition for commercially produced hot sauces in Europe, run annually since 2024 from heatawards.eu. EHSA was born out of the Berlin Chili Festival, which has run since 2019 and returns 4–6 September 2026, and became an independent competition in 2024. Over 200 sauces from producers across the continent were entered in 2026. Entries are judged blind across five criteria: aroma, heat profile, flavour, creativity and finish. The 2026 edition covers 16 categories, with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals awarded across multiple positions in each. Each category also names a Best in Category, the top Gold. EHSA is run independently of any single producer or retailer.
